To make money writing blogs, or articles, it’s important to create backlinks to your sites. If you’re not familiar, you should get familiar with them. What are backlinks? They are incoming links to your site. These links come from search engines(like google), or other sites directly. I’ve decided to personally take more of an interest in developing good backlinks on articles, and I’ve started fooling around with them more on my blog(which I should spend more time on). They help out a lot, if you’re trying to earn money online. It’s really easy, nothing too complicated about it. It takes work though, and a little adjustment on trying to build up solid backlinks to your sites.

Look for engine optimization consists mainly of on url page activity and off web page optimization. Creating inbound links is usually a aspect of off page optimization method. Large high quality backlinks have the prospective to enhance a website’s ranking inside SERPs.

Back links Are Regarded as Important Once they:

a. are do abide by

b. include the appropriate anchor text,

c. are deep connected to the relevant inner pages,

d. are related from higher PR niche internet sites

5 Tips for Constructing Beneficial Back links:

1. Perform A Aggressive Intelligence Analysis.

Competitive intelligence analysis allows you to scrutinize the competitor’s inbound links and their website link profiles. Operate a Google lookup for ones target keyword and list the best 20 competitors. Capitalize on the Yahoo! Lookup Explorer tool to decide the inbound links for every of the best competing websites. Use an Excel spreadsheet to make a record of all the backlink supplying web sites. The subsequent step would be to shortlist the do abide by internet sites through the checklist. Arrange them inside descending order of their PR. On the end of this process, you will have a list of highly important do follow internet sites to website link from.

2. Post URLs to Research Lookup directories. Search sites are of two kinds: general and market sites. Backlinks from market websites are generally regarded as a lot more valuable than the backlinks from basic lookup directories. Most of the search sites take months to process your linking request. You will find some websites which web page link again within a handful of times. Sites which build a large quantity of back-links in a few days are looked upon suspiciously by Google. The ideal way to build backlinks is over a time frame to prevent getting tagged as a link spammer. Distributing a website’s URL to lookup directories is a time consuming task but offers excellent outcomes at the finish.

3. Submit Articles to Write-up Websites. Submitting Content to article directories is usually a quite popular method to link building. Most from the posting directories permit you to consist of a url inside the article. You possibly can also add a link to the author description on the post with appropriate anchor text. Article sites are identified to rank properly inside lookup motor ranking pages. An added benefit of submitting to write-up websites may be the visitors it drives for your website. You will discover a big amount of large good quality article directories which accept free of charge content submission. Simply sign up, verify your account and begin submitting posts.

4. Post in Forums. Boards initially served being a signifies of conversing and solving queries. Today boards are also used to obtain valuable back-links to your web site. A majority of boards enable a signature hyperlink on the bottom of every single submit. This signature website link is usually a do-follow web page link. You possibly can select the preferred anchor text and web page link to any critical inner url page of one’s internet site. You can find a couple of boards which let you to enter far more than one particular signature url. Just bear in mind to participate within the conversation, ask questions and answer those of other people.

5. Develop Url Bait. Web page link bait involves making compelling content material for the web site which makes others hyperlink to it. You need to create frequently and regularly to grow a following. Maintain tab about the latest happenings and news inside your niche; be amongst the first number of to break the news on the internet. To develop that perfect hyperlink bait, your articles must include news, updates, a controversial subject or even some good resources. Keep the data quotient of the articles large and watch the url baits pour in.

In case you want other internet sites and blogs to website link to you, double examine who you are linking to. Don’t be inside a rush to obtain inbound links. A handful of good excellent and authoritative backlinks are worth much more than a hundred low excellent, reduced PR one way links.

Check your Keywords from SEO Tools .

I around one general niche topic. So this time I want to discuss how to do keyword research so you will know whether your chosen niche for your blog has profit potential or not, and how difficult it will be to compete.

1) Keyword Research

First, let’s talk about how to see how many searches a particular keyword phrase gets. Once you have decided on a broad niche you need to find the keywords within it that you want to target. There are many ways to do this but one of the best free options is to use the Google Keyword Tool.

Once you have the tool open just type in your main keyword phrase in the search box. For example, let’s say you chose weight loss as your niche, so type that into the box. Keep the “use synonyms” box below it checked. Then, type in the security code and click the “get keyword ideas” button. Next, look at the top right of the results and you will see a drop down menu that says “broad” — click that and choose “exact” instead — This is important because it gives you a much closer idea of the actual search volume of the phrases.

Go through that list and find the keywords that best match what you want your site to be about that also have a good amount of monthly searches. Keep it to around 10 or so keywords at first. You can target more and more phrases as time goes on but you don’t want too many right away.

Now, let’s look at how to see how much competition you have for the keyword phrases you want to target. Let’s continue with our example from above and say you decided to start a “weight loss” blog, which is a very competitive niche, so you would have your work cut out for you. But let’s just keep using that as an example for the sake of this post.

2) Check Your Competition

The most basic way to check your competition is to go to Google and search for your keyword phrase with quotes around it. So, you would search “weight loss” and the other weight loss related keyword phrases that you chose from your research with the Google keyword tool above, and see how many results come up. Make sure you use the quotes or you won’t get the true competition.

That gives you a general idea of how many websites you will be competing against to rank #1 for each keyword phrase. If it’s fairly low then you might be on to something. But remember some competition is good because it’s a sign that there’s money to be made in the niche. You just don’t want so much that you can’t compete.

3) Check Backlinks And Pagerank

You are not done there. You also need to see how strong the top 10 sites are that rank for your keyword phrases…

To do that you need to look at how many backlinks they have and what the page rank (PR) of their site is. If you have the Google toolbar installed you will easily be able to see their PR but if you don’t then you can go to http://www.checkpagerank.net to check it. PR is not extremely important but it is something that should be taken into consideration when judging what you are up against. If all the sites in the first 10 results have PR4 or higher then it’s probably a really tough niche to crack. If some of them have low or no PR then it’s a good sign for you.

In order to check their backlinks you will want to use Yahoo site explorer. Your first instinct is probably to use the Google link search but they do not show even close to all the backlinks a site really has so Yahoo is much more accurate.

Go to http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com and type in the URL of the #1 Google ranked site for your main keyword phrases and see how many links they have. In the drop down menu next to the results choose “except from this domain” so it doesn’t show links coming from their own site. Do this for at least a few of the top 10 sites in your niche to get a good estimate of how strong they are. The less links they have the better.

Your goal is basically to find niches that have a good amount of monthly searches with some competition but not too much, and the competition they do have isn’t very strong. After that all you do is build the site, do some SEO to get your site ranked highly, monetize it, laugh all the way to the bank, then repeat the process.

That’s pretty much all there is to it. Of course, this is the condensed version to fit in a blog post, but you should be able to figure it out using the above information and a little more research on the topic. Finding good niches and keyword phrases to target isn’t the easiest thing you will ever do but it’s not overly complicated either.

When linking to other websites from your site, you inevitably have a decision on your hands. Should you add a ‘rel=”nofollow”‘ attribute to the HTML anchor tag used to link to the third-party website, or should you leave it out (do-follow it).

In the eyes of the search engines, a do-followed link from your site is basically a vote for the site being linked to. In a way, you’re vouching for the legitimacy of the site you’re linking to. If that site turns out to be abusive, you risk hurting your site’s credibility with the search engines by linking to that site.

On the other hand, linking out to high-quality sites that are relevant to the subject matter of the page you are linking them from, is known to actually benefit your site. As long as you don’t overdo it, most search engines appreciate your letting them know that a site is worth linking to, and will give your site a little more credibility as a result. If you no-follow links to high-quality sites and pages that have content that is relevant to your site’s content, then you are basically telling the search engines, “I can’t be bothered to check that this site is worth linking to, but I’m going to link to it anyway.”, which obviously doesn’t encourage the search engines to have confidence in either you, or your site.

Of course, it’s not always possible to thoroughly vet each and every site you may link to on your website. There’s also the possibility that a site may change for the worse after you have visited it. The search engines understand this and will give you some leeway as a result. Nevertheless, it’s in your best interest to investigate the sites you are considering linking to wherever possible, and make an informed decision about whether you want to link to them, and how you want to link to them

Paragraph First impressions are often the best guide when you visit a new site. Does the site instill you with confidence? Does it look like the webmaster takes their site seriously, or are they just slapping up any old content, and spamming the site with keywords? Are there obvious issues with spelling and grammar, and with page layout and site navigation? Does it make you want to leave, or stay?

Is the content on the site relevant to your site, and in particular, is the page that you are linking to relevant to the page that you are linking it from?

You may also wish to check out some of the sites that the linked site is itself linking to. Are these quality sites and are they relevant to the page they are linked from? And yes, I know what you’re thinking – “Where does it end?”. A quick and cursory sampling of a small, random selection of the linked sites is all that you need, but this can sometimes tell you more than all the other factors combined. Remember that search engine link juice can flow a long way along the link chain.

If your overall impression of the site’s quality and relevance is good, then you should consider do-following it. If it is bad, or you don’t have the opportunity to check the site out, then consider no-following it.

NOTE: You can learn more about the ‘rel=”nofollow”‘ HTML anchor tag attribute by visiting the Wikipedia page at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nofollow

If you have received some visitors to your website how do you get them to return?

So you have received some visitors to your brand new website but how do you get them to return?

Firstly you should always offer additional value. What do I mean by additional value? One example would be to place links to affiliate and partner sites and request that they do the same for you. If their products are related to your particular industry but not in direct competition with yours then why not advertise their books/videos? With most you should be able to earn some commission and also get repeat traffic.

Allow customers to “opt in” for special discounts/offers. Perhaps offer a regular newsletter?

Besides adding a link to your primary page asking your visitor to “book mark” or “add to favorites” also add a link asking them to recommend to a friend. It would also be advisable to include a pre-written title such as “I’m sure that this will interest you” just by clicking on it.

An “Our Policy” page clearly defining your business ethics and principles must be included. This will include a privacy policy so that clients feel secure when visiting your site.

Ensure that you site is branded using consistent logos, colors etc so that visitors always know they are on your site. However this doesn’t mean that you neglect to update the pages of your website on a frequent basis as you don’t want to create a stale image but rather an interesting exciting up to the minute site. This will help you get the repeat traffic.

A FAQ page should be created which addresses most of the doubts that you feel your potential client might have and this can be used to also clarify your product/company further.

It is also important that the potential customer can find their way back to your site in the event that they lose the book mark by ensuring that each page has appropriate keywords and titles.

Finally but perhaps most important of all never, never spam any client who has opted in for newsletters with unsolicited emails. Always allow them the option to “opt out” of the mailings and ensure that you honor this request. If they like your products they may come back but they are very unlikely to do so if their email box is flooded with information they no longer wish to receive. Don’t forget you are after repeat traffic

So take care when setting up your website and when done properly you should gain a regular enthusiastic client base who will continue to return to your site on a regular basis. Brilliant! You now have repeat traffic.

To your success!

Recent changes to Google make it seem like Google is no longer just one search engine but a combination of 6 or 7 different search engines all rolled into one.

Recent changes to Google make it seem like Google is no longer just one search engine but a combination of 6 or 7 different search engines all rolled into one. Your SEO efforts should now be geared to ranking high in these search engines as well as in traditional organic search.

A little while back, I wrote an article entitled “The Five Pillars of Google Search” and had I known how important those pillars would become, I would have paid more attention to them. What I didn’t factor into the equation was Google’s whole re-structuring of its SERPs interface or landing page. It really is a whole new Google with not just one search engine but a combination of 6 or 7 search engines all competing for your attention.

The new left side column with its new functions and displays, opens up new opportunities for webmasters to get their listings within Google on that all-important first page. There are also many new ways to view the results such as view everything, or you can view with more or less shopping links. Plus, you can also view Google results for books, maps, blogs, updates, and discussions – all new ways to get your site or links into Google. Throw in the Wonder Wheel and things are indeed looking very different within the new Google SERPs.

As a full-time online search engine marketer, I should have expected something like this but the recent changes within Google has been totally unprecedented. We have seen major updates before, some of them very disruptive like the Florida update, but with Google Caffeine, MayDay Update, new layout and the recent shakeup of its Algorithm, Google has fundamentally changed how its organic search are ranked and used.

Before I start sounding too cryptic, these recent changes seem to be a “coming together” of all the different types of searches in Google, which have been around for some time. Now it seems with the new interface architecture… each type of search is given more importance or rather more of an equal billing or footing within Google. There are now multiple ways to get your links viewed and hopefully clicked within the most important search engine on the planet.

First, I always try to start any piece on Google or the search engines with a disclaimer. Mainly, in the course of running 9 or 10 websites, I keep a daily monitoring of the keywords which produce revenue, some of these keyword phrases have been monitored by me for 6 or 7 years, but they are only a small sampling of keywords and sometimes drawing or making conclusions with such a small sample can be misleading or downright wrong. So take any of the following information on Google with this point in mind, just one webmaster observing what’s happening with Google and putting in his two cents worth.

Now, the reason I say “Google’s New Search Engines” is the feeling which has gradually crept into my daily marketing – it feels like you’re no longer dealing with one organic search engine but 6 or 7 different search engines. Let me explain, for years Google has been presenting results for not just static webpages but also for images, videos, news, blogs and shopping/products – but recent changes have shaken up things significantly.

With the recent changes, Google seems to be placing more importance on these new ways to search. Videos have taken a big step forward and can now pop up on the first page and stay there. Producing a video is now one of the fastest ways to get on the first page of Google, even for very competitive keywords. While many online marketers are taking advantage of this fact, it is relatively new and you can have a much better chance of ranking for a video instead of an ordinary web page in Google. It can happen almost instantly.

Personally, I like using the YouTube platform because it is also owned by Google and they no doubt can easily tap into all the background stats on a video such as comments, viewer ratings… and so on. In other words, Google has always favored ways to make their SERPs more democratic and user generated/rated videos are the perfect fit.

So too are blog posts and entries, these can be easily monitored and (comment spam aside) are more democratic since it’s harder to fake Diggs or Re-tweets. All of these social bookmarking systems and sites provide the search engines, especially Google, with some very helpful user-generated rankings and ratings. Blogs now also have two subcategories – Twitter/Facebook Updates and Forum Discussions, which are now being displayed separately.

Google seems to be placing more importance on popular Posts, Diggs, Tweets… in their SERPs. Again, I find using a simple Google owned program like Blogger to be an effective way of ranking high in Google. For example, my posts in Blogger are indexed in Google within minutes, this recently seems to have been sped up and we are moving more towards instant search results.

Another instant way to get your content onto the first page of Google is to use a News Release. Google has always listed News Items on the first page but this now seems to play a more important role, especially when you consider all the new features in the left side column. Surfers will probably stay on that first page longer and you have a better chance of getting your news item read.

Within the last couple of years, I have started doing Press Releases, mainly through PRweb but there are lots of free programs you can use. I also like posting my articles to American Chronicle since Google News picks up and displays a lot of these items. Again, like videos, getting your News item listed is almost instant and within seconds you can have traffic flowing to your site.

Images and image search has always been an important feature of Google Search. One that online marketers and webmasters have taken advantage of by creating images to match the main products or keywords of their sites. Now image search, itself, is much more varied and has many more options to re-define your image search, for example you could target a certain color or line drawings. Regardless, images can be an easy way to get traffic from Google.

Within the shopping results is the place to be featured if you have a product to sell. This is the old product listing (Froogle), which Google has renamed to Shopping or Product Search. For those into online marketing, this is probably the most important listing as you’re sure to attract specific buyers who are in the right mind-set to purchase. To learn more about submitting your products to Google Product Search go here: http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/products/submit.html

While all these search options can be somewhat confusing to grasp even for the online marketer, all these options do present different ways to get on that first page in Google search. And while the number one spot in organic search will always be your main goal, ranking for the top spot in the shopping results, video results, news results, blog results, update results, discussion results and image results are all worth aiming for in your SEO efforts. Some of these are temporary or fast moving, but there are certain tactics you can use, which will increase your presence in the most important search engine, which delivers the most search traffic on the web.

Make sure you take a holistic approach to both your content and SEO. Create videos and images geared towards your site’s topic and keywords. Make sure you have a blog and a forum on your site to take advantage of these types of listings. Likewise, fully integrate your site with all the social bookmarking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Google Buzz… and become an active part of those sites. Make sure you’re creating news related items for your site or keywords, to keep your site in the whole mix of things on the web. Make sure you have a steady flow of fresh content being added to your site regularly and link this content to the “Q&A” types of sites; there is a growing emphasis being placed on these help-based sites by the search engines.

Lastly, I am a firm believer in having all your content/sites/programs interconnected with one another. Something as simple as using a Google Profile to list ALL your online programs and sites is one way of making them ALL reachable by your visitors and Google. But go for the overkill, do the same thing for your Facebook page, your MySpace page, your Linkedin page… and also interconnect all your different content by referencing your videos in your News Releases, your Twitter profile in your articles, your Facebook page in your posts… well, you get the picture.

There is no social media marketing wand that someone will wave and a target audience will automatically start coming to your site. And what works for one brand may not work for another.

The process of creating buzz doesn’t start from creating a Blog or creating a video, it’s a social media strategy that encompasses social media and word-of-mouth marketing. We have compiled a list of social media tools that companies use to build their social media marketing mixes.

1. Blogs

Blogs have become a great tool for social media marketing. First because, if optimized correctly, they can be used to drive traffic to a website. A good blog will help in creating internal links, fresh content, active community, or non-search engine traffic.

Examples of popular blogs where you can create your account are: Wordpress, Blog.com, Bloggers.com, Typepad, etc.

2. Microblogging

Like blogs, microblogs propose huge opportunities for business endorsement. That is both through content consistency and good optimization. Two of the most used are Posterous and Twitter.

3. Online Video

The importance of online videos has rapidly increased during the last few years. To read more on this topic, have a look at our blog on The Growing Importance of Online Video. Popular video sharing websites include YouTube and Vimeo.

4. Photosharing

Social media is all about sharing! Therefore, there are numerous platforms that allow photo sharing with your friends. Some of them are: Flickr.com, Memeo.com, and Photobucket.com.

5. Podcasting

Podcasting is part of the new media tools that are offered to both promote your brand and your products/services. Check out Blip.fm or RadioPodcast.fr.

6. Presentation Sharing

Another great way to put your brand’s name in the spotlight is by offering presentations on topics of interest for your audience on presentation sharing websites. They are increasingly gaining in popularity nowadays. Some of them are: SlideShare.net, MyPlick.com, Scribd.com, or AuthorSTREAM.com.

7. Social Networks: Applications, Fan Pages, Groups, and Personalities

Social networks are the place to present and promote yourself as well as to keep in touch with your targeted audience. You can read a list of the most popular on our blog on our blog on Top Social Media Network Sites!

8. Crowd Sourcing/Voting

Crowdsourcing is an effective model because it can be used for developing programs, marketing efforts, research, and education. For example Dell has used Crowdsourcing as a distributed problem-solving and production model and has reduced costs and increased their efficiency. Also look at the Grand Challenge for FNIH to see a crowd sourcing campaign.

9. Bookmarking/Tagging

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to share, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web resources. Examples of popular social bookmarking websites: delicious.com, Digg, Diigo, Fark, Mixx, MyBlogLog, Newsvine, Propeller, Reddit, Slashdot.org, StumbleUpon, Yahoo!, and Buzz.

10. Discussion Boards and Forums

Online forums are a great way to market your products/services and interact with other professionals or your audience. Engaging your audience in your niche forum can bring high value to your site and brand too.

11. Content Aggregation

Content aggregation offers you the chance to bring all news and feeds around your online community accounts in one place. Some say this is the future of social media. Emerging content aggregation websites: Bloglines, FriendFeed, Lifestream.fm, Lijit.

12. Brand Monitoring

Social media is also offering a variety of tools that help businesses understand the positioning of their brand. Popular examples are: Buzzlogic, Radian6, or ReputationDefender.

13. Ratings and Reviews

The best way to find out where your website stands or how your brand is perceived by others is through ratings and reviews. See Yelp, or GetSatisfaction.

14. Widgets

For those who are trying to promote their own brands, they can create personalized badges, using interesting widgets on Facebook, Twitter, and other networks or by simply using WidgetBox or SpringWidgets.

15. Wikis

Wikis are our online encyclopedia. A short list of wikis: Wikipedia.org, Citizendium.org, AboutUs.org, Pbwiki(PBworks.com), or Wetpaint.com.

Along with all the new ways of publishing your content on networking sites, it is important to publish your articles on publishing sites like EzineArticles, eHow, Google Docs (docs.google.com), IdeaMarketers, Yahoo Articles Group (groups.yahoo.com) and submit your press releases on important specialized sites like i-Newswire, PR.com, PressReleasePoint, and PRLog.org.

Social Media Marketing can be very confusing at times. There are lots of networks and channels to choose from. Creating a presence on all the channels is very time consuming and randomly choosing a network is not a good social media strategy. Companies are struggling to understand what social media marketing mix they should use to make their brand successful in the online world.

We suggest it is important to identify which channels are suitable for your business depending on your target audience. Businesses must plan a step-by-step onlíne marketing strategy and brainstorm ideas with their onlíne marketing agency that will work for their products/service.

One of my favorite things I like to do when I’m online is browse the Internet, and check out other marketing websites. I’m an avid reader, so when I come across a well-designed website that appears to have an abundance of quality content, I’ll usually spend a few minutes on the site reading that content. And if the site provides a pleasant reader experience, I’ll bookmark it and visit it again.

However, it takes a very special website to capture my attention. And unfortunately, most sites fall far short of my expectations. As a result, I rarely bookmark websites. No, more often than not, when I visit a website, I click away after just a second or two.

Why? Because in my opinion, many websites just aren’t what I would call reader-friendly. In fact, they’re just the opposite. They provide a lousy reader experience.

Following are five things that ruin my reader experience:

1. Too Busy Web Pages

Have you ever visited a web page that was so busy and overcrowded your eyes didn’t know what to focus on? The tragedy of these types of web pages is some of them probably have content that readers would be interested in.

But the web pages are so doggone clutttered and disorganized, visitors can’t find what they’re looking for – or are too frustrated to even try.

When you design your website, arrange items in a neat and orderly fashion. Space things out. Because when it comes to website design, a little white space is a good thing.

Also, if you don’t already have one, install a sitemap. The following website will allow you to quickly and easily create your own sitemap right online:

http://www.xml-sitemaps.com

In addition to a sitemap, installing an internal search box will also improve your visitors reading experience, as well as assist them in finding the information that they’re seeking. This is especially important if you have a large website with lots of pages.

If you would like to learn more about installing an internal search box on your site, TechSoup has written an excellent article on the topic, titled Adding a Search Engine to Your Site Is Easier than You Think:

http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/webbuilding/archives/page9353.cfm

2. Reverse Type

I’m absolutely amazed at how many websites I’ve visited that are written in reverse text. What’s reverse text? Reverse text is light colored or white text on a dark or black background. If used correctly, reverse text can produce an impressive visual impact.

The problem is many websites don’t use it correctly. And if you have a whole web page of reverse text, it’s extremely difficult on the eyes.

Why? Because according to readability studies, reverse text is not suitable for reading because of its poor legibility even in normal lighting conditions. It’s hard on the eyes, and just not reader-friendly. That’s why newspapers, books and magazines have always been printed on white paper with black text.

When designing your website, it’s best to use black text on a white or light-colored background, for optimum readability. However if you decide to use reverse text, use it in moderation.

3. Huge Blocks of Text

Internet users are notorious scanners. They’ll scan your text first, before deciding whether or not to actually read it. That’s why you should always break up your text into short, reader-friendly paragraphs.

When I come across a web page that has these huge blocks of text, (ie, paragraphs that never seem to end), I won’t even waste my valuable time trying to read it. I’ll just click away, and leave your site.

And if I feel that way, you can bet other visitors to your site feel the exact same way. Again, always break up your text into short paragraphs. In addition, use bullets and subheads whenever possible. They help break up your text, so that it’s easier to read.

Remember what I said earlier? Internet users are notorious scanners. That’s why subheads and bullets are so important.

4. Tiny Font Sizes

Do you remember the nearsighted cartoon character, Mr. Magoo? He always walked around with his eyes in a permanent squint, trying to visually decipher things that were right in front of him.

Well, that’s exactly how I feel when I visit some websites. I find myself squinting like Mr. Magoo, because the font size is so tiny. When that happens, guess what? Click…I’m outta there.

Do your readers a favor, and stay away from tiny font sizes. Stick with the standard 12-point font size, whenever possible.

Conversely, it’s not a good ideal to use overly large font sizes either. It’s just not reader-friendly. Another thing, use ALL CAPS and fancy fonts in moderation.

5. Excessive Bold Type and Highlighting

The other day I was browsing the Internet doing research, when I came across something that caught my eye – but not in a good way. It was a web page, and it was absolutely hideous. So, what made it so hideous?

The entire web page written entirely in bold type, which is a crime in itself. But even worse than that, the page was highlighted in yellow from top to bottom.

Can you imagine that? It looked like a big mustard sandwich with ants.

Unfortunately, I see this all too often on websites. You should always use bold type and highlight in moderation, and only to emphasize certain words, sentences or paragraphs.

In closing, I hope you’ll take these reader-friendly website design tips to heart, and apply them to your website, if applicable. After all, you only get one chance to make a first impression.

If you’ve been submitting articles to publishers for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that some of your articles are significantly more popular than others.

What can you do with that information to help you write future articles that capitalize on the success of your previous ones?

Should you assume that it is the title that spawned the increase in interest? If so, should you try to use that same title for other articles?

These are all great questions, and I’m happy to answer them for you.

Each of your article titles should be unique. I know it is tempting to try to reuse the titles of your most popular articles, but you must resist that urge. There are a few reasons for this:

Publishers want fresh content, and a unique title conveys that the article is also unique. If a publisher sees that you’re submitting articles with the same title, it can appear that you’re submitting the same article repeatedly. You must give publishers the types of articles that they want. Publishers want fresh articles with unique titles.

Let’s imagine that a reader is looking at your list of articles on an article directory. He scans your list of article titles and sees that there are several repeats. Do you think that a reader would read each of these articles that bear the same title? Repetitive titles make it look like there are duplicate submissions, and they decrease the effectiveness of your articles.

Also, your title should reflect what your article is about. Every one of your articles should offer fresh information on your topic, so consequently your titles should also be different.

It’s not a given that the title is the reason why a particular article is popular. It could be a number of factors that contribute to a very successful article.

You will need to do some experimenting:

Perhaps it was the subject matter of the article. If your topic struck a cord with your target readers it could result in more views. Try writing another article that covers this same or similar subject matter from a different angle.

Did you use keywords in your title? If you do keyword research you can pinpoint the most popular phrasing of a particular search term, and then you can use the search term in your title. If you have not done keyword research yet, you may have unwittingly used a popular search term in your title which resulted in more views for that article.

For future articles it is worth it to do a few minutes worth of keyword research prior to writing an article and then to appropriately incorporate your keywords into your title.

Was your title in a different format from your other titles? For instance, maybe your title was a question. In that case you could try making other titles be in the form of a question.

Perhaps the title indicated a specific type of article, such as a “how to” article or a “top tips” article. If an article of this type did well with your target market, then it is worth it to try to write other articles of that type and see how they do.

There are many elements that could be contributing to a super successful article. Take the information you gather from looking at your article list and play around with your future articles and titles.

Search engine submission can be considered a method to market your site and calls for the straightforward submission of a site’s URL to many search engines. This used to be the favored method of getting websites listed. But many search engines presently make use of different ways to seek out webpages. Although this is the case, there are a couple of good reasons why you must do search engine submission for your webpage.

If you have a brand-new web-based business, there is a big possibility that you also got a new webpage to support it. It’s better to submit a website than wait around for it to be noticed by spiders. Submitting your site will enable it to be detected by folks via basic search queries.

The next reason why site submission is a good way to advertise your website involves search engines’ updates: when a search engine is updated and you’ve sent your site’s URL to it, it would generate your website again as part of the search results.

There’s two ways to submit a webpage. You can submit it one page at a time or utilize a sitemap to submit all the site’s contents as well as links in a single instance. But the easiest way to execute site submission is to just send in your webpage’s home page. If your webpage is made well, search engines would start listing it right after it’s submitted. The idea is to make your webpage appear as among the best search results. The sites that get the best spots would have more traffic since people regularly consider just the leading results and select a site to visit in accordance with those rankings.

A webmaster has to optimize a website to be placed in the top 10 listings. The factors that have to be taken into consideration to make a website get noticed include the hierarchy structure of the webpage, keyword placement and keyword density.

In the year 2004, the top search engines acquired the capability to find new websites immediately. This is done by having an automatic indexer locate links coming from other sites. Backlink services could be used to make certain that you will have a lot of backlinks to your site, which would then be located by most search engines and also have an effect on your rankings.

These days, site submission is necessary only if a new website is rolled out. Believe it or not, this might violate the Terms of Service agreements of the major search engines. In the event that a search engine determines that you’ve dishonored its Terms of Service, it’ll bar your webpage from being added to its search results. Regardless, a webmaster could make use of all the submission methods in the international market as long as she / he goes through each and every Terms of Service agreement; making use of all of the popular search engines will yield the best results for a website.

Despite the presence of spiders, lots of international search engines still need to have sites submitted to them. This ascertains that website owners can reach an incredible number of internet users in a variety of markets. You could utilise applications to help you submit your site, and there’s also many enterprises that will help you make certain that your webpage is indexed correctly.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… there is no more important step in the SEO process than keyword research. One could make a compelling argument for link building or for architecture or for copywriting but at the end of the day – ranking highly for keywords that either don’t convert or which you close up shop waiting to rank for isn’t going to help too terribly much so in my opinion – I’d put keyword research higher in importance. In fact, when I’m building affiliate sites my first step is to look up keywords and competition levels – then I look into products and websites and this method has worked very well indeed. It insures that I choose keywords that will both convert and that I can rank for in a period of ime and with an effort level that matches the return.

So – if you’re doing keyword research, where should you begin? Unless you’re an affiliate marketer you already have a product and since you’re the target audience of this article – I’m going to assume that’s the case. For the purpose of this article I’m going to pick a hobby of mine and also an area where I don’t have a client and imagine I’m doing keyword research for the imaginary online downhill mountain biking store, DH Mountain Bikes.

So Where To Begin …

The first thing one needs to do is try to think up all the possible phrases that might apply. I call this my seed list… it’s the list of phrases that my research starts with and is generally based on brainstorming. In this case the list would be:

downhill mountain bike

dh mountain bike

mountain bike

The keyword tool I generally use first is Google’s keyword suggestion tool. There are other great tools but I’ve found Google’s tool to be as accurate as any other, the price is definitely right (free), and they’re very good about providing the information required to know just how wrong the data is if you know where to look. So let’s do just that.

Before we begin you’ll need to head over to Google’s keyword tool at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. In the top left (for now) you’ll see a link to a beta version of the tool. Click on the link and you’ll be at the new version of the tool which will provide you easy access to much more information – as long as you know what to look for. So let’s begin with our three seed phrases.

When you see the list you’ll first have to know what the numbers are. This tool is a tool designed for AdWords and the default number is the Broad match which means it includes every phrase with the term. For example, the term “mountain bike” has a broad match total of 2,740,000 which will include “downhill mountain bike”, “mountain bike parts”, “kona mountain bike”, etc. etc.

What we want to know is how many searches are for “mountain bike”. Down the left-hand side you’ll see a set of check boxes. Deselect “Broad” and select “Exact” and you’ll get the Exact match numbers – the number of searches for the exact phrase. You’ll quickly see that 2,740,000 drop to 450,000. This is how many people searched the GOOGLE SEARCH NETWORK for “mountain bike”. Why is this in caps – because it’s so commonly
misunderstood that I definitely want your attention brought to it. This isn’t the number of searches on Google.com – it’s the number of searches on all sites whose search is powered by Google. From YouTube to Beanstalk’s blog search – it’s all in there so the data starts to get skewed from the start. Then let’s add in all the automated queries from rank-checking tools and just manual searches from you and your competitors and the data gets further skewed. This skewing will exist in all data – the thing I like about using Google is that at least we know more about what’s adjusting the data.

OK – so from there we need to organize the data into a more useful set of information. To do this one needs to understand the columns of data. The first column is the keyword, the second you’ll see is a link to the term on Google Insights. We’ll get into this later. The next is Global Monthly Searches – this is the average number of searches/mo. worldwide. This can be helpful in some industries but in ours – I’m only concerned with the US market which is where my imaginary store ships to so I’m more interested in the next column Local Monthly Searches which is the number of searches in the US (or whatever region I’ve specified when entering my keyword phrases). This is the data I’m interested in. The last column is the search trend. This is extremely important but often overlooked. It is a column that wasn’t visible by default in the old/current version.

OK – let’s organize our data by search volume. Click on the “Local Monthly Searches” and you’ll see the keywords order by descending search volume. With this data in front of me I then typically look over to the Trend data to see what I can find there. In our case we’re going to see an increase in search volume in the spring and summer. This make sense of course. Think of your industry and see if the trends reflect what makes sense.

I’m also looking for anomalies. Often I’ll see phrases that jump for a single month. One has to know that unless there was a news story or other event that would spark interest in a single term or brand – a tool or some other such incident is likely falsifying the data. You need to look at these trends and see if they make sense. If not – you need to either test the phrases with PPC or just skip over them and select different phrases. There’s little worse as an SEO than focusing energies on a phrase only to find that the search volume is not what was expected based on the estimates delivered.

So now what?

So what do you do once you’ve filtered your data down to just what you’re interested in looking into competition levels on. Well – the first thing I do is to look to the trends to see if there are any phrases that obviously need to be filtered out. In this case there really aren’t any high in the search volume column. So the only thing left is to look at the competition levels to see what makes sense. For our purposes we’ll be dividing the list and research into two categories:

Major phrases – We need to decide what the long-term goals are going to be and the targets for the main pages. These will be the totally generic phrases such as “mountain bike” and “downhill mountain bike” as well as brand or type specific phrases such as “specialized mountain bike” and “full suspension mountain bike”.

Longtail phrases – We also need to look into the types of longtail phrases we’re going to want to target. In this case I know I’ll want to target specific parts which will require new research. I will spare you the details there, but I’ll end up with specific models of components such as “hayes mx2?. You don’t need to know what that is - you need to know the makes and models in your industry (or other longatil opportunities such as “new york hotel with jacuzzi”, etc.)

I generally would gather together a list of 15 or 20 major phrases and 50 or 60 longtail phrases and would then head into the competition analysis to determine which phrases to move forward with.

Climbing to the top of the search engines is the goal of every home base business owner that own a website. A well optimize website alone may help you achieve those goals if you are a niche market with little competition. On the other hand if your niche market is one shared by many marketers, you will have to prove to the search engines that you site has more relevance. The way to differentiate your business from the many on the internet is by creating high quality backlinks.

Many website owners are deterred from generating high quality backlinks to their website either from lack of time or lack of money. The truth is that creating thousands of backlinks does not have to be time consuming or costly. In fact there many ways to generate high Pr backlinks to you website for free. Using the methods I am about to share with you will be able to generate a PR 3 ranking in 90 days or less.

The first thing you must do to create free backlinks is to join five forums related to your niche. Once you have joined five forums, make sure you make a least 10 post per day to each forum. Forums usually have a high pr ranking and they are indexed by the search engines. Furthermore, every one of your post will equal to a high quality backlinks as long as you make sure you include you website’s url in you forum signature.

The next step you will need to take is to submit your website to as many directories you can that are relevant to your websites content. You can either submit your websites manually or you can use a submission service to speed up the process. In addition to the backlinks, you will also generate a great deal of traffic.

The third step will be to write three articles per week and submit your articles to fifty article directories every week. This method is one of the most effective, because once you submit your articles, chances are they will get picked up by other article directories creating even more backlinks to your website.

The fourth method is to post to one hundred social sites at least three times a week. There are hundreds of social networking websites like Digg, Sphinn, Stumble Upon and Mixx. These social web 2.0 sites have a high Google ranking and also can create a heap of traffic. I suggest posting to one hundred social networking and social bookmarking sites daily. To make the submission faster you should use a social bookmarking software to post to multiple sites at one time.

The final step is to submit your RSS feed to one hundred RSS directories. If you do not have an RSS feed for your website, you should look into creating one. RSS feeds are important in generating backlinks and traffic to your website. In the meantime you can substitute for not having an RSS feed by posting comments to ten do follow blogs daily.

The steps provided will take you approximate 3 hours per day to complete, while establishing a PR 3 website will bring you tons of traffic from the search engines. You may also receive offers from advertisers to display their ads on your PR 3 website thus increasing your income dramatically.

One of the most problematic and confusing issues most webmasters have with Google concerns linking. How your links are ranked? How you should link out? How you should construct your internal links? How you should get more inbound links? How many links should you have on a page? And the list of questions goes on…

Perhaps, the most annoying aspect for the struggling webmaster, has been Google’s secrecy in how it actually ranks links and pages. Google’s whole PageRank and Ranking Algorithm is so complex that no one can fully boast they understand how the whole system works.

Google’s ranking secrecy and complexity has probably been well-planned mainly because there are millions of webmasters who would like to “game” the Google Algorithm and achieve high keyword rankings through manipulation with so-called “black-hat” SEO techniques and reverse engineering.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if this whole secrecy and complexity is more of a smokescreen rather than an actual deception on Google’s part. What if the keys to the kingdom are actually yours for the taking? What if the solution is hiding in plain sight for everyone to see? What if the secret to high rankings in Google is not a secret at all? Wouldn’t that be a hoot!

Actually, that’s not a far-fetched assumption to make, mainly because many of Google’s linking policies and recommendations are freely given by Google. Whether you can believe Google is actually giving you the goods is another issue that we’ll put on the back-burner for another day; but for now, Google’s advice on link building is rather generous and informative.

As a part of Links Week held recently, Google’s Maile Ohye gave some pointers on what Google is looking for and how it does its index ranking. No big surprise that content and inbound links are the two most important factors. This is what most SEO experts have been saying for years.

A site’s content is one of the main factors. Therefore, you should have a compelling site with interesting information and/or offer quality products, entertainment, opinions…

(Quoting Maile Ohye)

“One of the strongest ranking factors is my site’s content. Additionally, perhaps my site is also linked from three sources — however, one inbound link is from a spammy site. As far as Google is concerned, we want only the two quality inbound links to contribute to the PageRank signal in our ranking.”

“Given the user’s query, over 200 signals (including the analysis of the site’s content and inbound links as mentioned above) are applied to return the most relevant results to the user.”

“As many of you know, relevant, quality inbound links can affect your PageRank (one of many factors in our ranking algorithm). And quality links often come naturally to sites with compelling content or offering a unique service.”

(End Quote)

Then Maile Ohye explained further how to create unique and compelling content for your site:

(Quoting Maile Ohye)

- Start a blog: make videos, do original research, and post interesting stuff on a regular basis. If you’re passionate about your site’s topic, there are lots of great avenues to engage more users.

- Teach readers new things, uncover new news, be entertaining or insightful, show your expertise, interview different personalities in your industry and highlight their interesting side. Make your site worthwhile.

- Participate thoughtfully in blogs and user reviews related to your topic of interest. Offer your knowledgeable perspective to the community.

- Provide a useful product or service. If visitors to your site get value from what you provide, they’re more likely to link to you.

(End Quote)

SEO experts have been telling webmasters for years that creating valuable, unique, relevant useful content is one of the best ways to get your site and pages highly ranked in Google. If you create valuable content then other sites will want to link to you naturally.

Linking out to other sites should be done in a “common sense” manner and it’s a way of offering value to your visitor’s experience. We expect helpful relevant links when we visit other sites since it’s a natural way a good quality site should work; so be careful of linking out to spammy sites that only offer pages of links with very little or no unique content.

There are several things every prudent webmaster should be checking like making sure your site hasn’t been hacked and hidden links placed on your site without your knowledge; those with WordPress blogs should be installing the latest security measures and updates. Make sure you keep checking all your outbound links regularly since you may initially link out to a valuable resource, but over time this page may be closed or replaced with one of those spammy-links-holding pages. It can happen to the best of us.

What has confused things lately is all the “link buying” which Google greatly discourages and has shown its displeasure by de-ranking many paid directories. The size of your “wallet” shouldn’t be the determining factor in how pages and content are ranked. If you’re selling a link, it should have the “no-follow” tag so that it doesn’t pass PageRank along and confuse the system. Policing or deciding what is or what is not a “paid link” has become a major problem for the search engines, including Google.

You should not have more than “100 links on a page” as this can overload the search engine robots that regularly crawl the web, indexing pages. Likewise, your site’s “linking architecture” should be natural and easy for both your visitors and the robots to follow. Make sure your important pages are no more than a few clicks away from your homepage.

As to interior linking, the two main points being: Intuitive Navigation for your visitors and Crawlable Text Links for the search engine robots. Use descriptive anchor text links that explain your content to your visitors. The anchor text is the underlined clickable part of the link and many SEO experts suggest you place your keywords or variations of them in your anchor text.

Make sure your site is transparent. Do not use “link cloaking” on your site. Make sure what your visitor sees is what the robots are indexing. Use a 301 Redirect if you have permanently moved any webpages. Again, there is stressed the need for a sitemap as this can be very helpful for both your visitors and robots to see and find all your valuable content. Make sure you have a sitemap and all your important pages are listed on it.

One final note, many professional webmasters and marketers don’t worry about PageRank as much as they are concerned with SERPs. Getting those top rankings for their sites in the search engine results is what really matters. Again, quality content and building quality links play an important role in achieving those top spots and maybe Google has already given you the formula for getting them. Maybe, maybe not.

Learn how to avoid common mistakes with these 10 simple do’s and don’ts.

10. Don’t Use Flash for SEO. Flash websites are very eye-catching but search engines cannot read or index this type of content. If it is impossible to avoid a Flash-centric website and you need search engines to index it, you will have to offer an html version too. Search engines don’t like Flash sites for a reason – a spider can’t read Flash content and therefore can’t index it.

9. Don’t Use too Much JavaScript. Searchbots are not designed to read and understand JavaScript code. If a website contains a few lines of text in the JavaScript code, chances are that searchbots will ignore the entire block of code along with the text. This is true in the case of JavaScript menus. Try to keep the use of JavaScript to a minimum. Alternatively, create an external JavaScript file if it is unavoidable.

8. Do Implement a Robots.txt File. The primary purpose for using a robots.txt file is to gain complete control over the data indexed by the searchbots. Implement a Robots.txt file only when you want to prevent unwanted web pages from being indexed. A robots.txt file is always placed in the root folder of the website where the searchbots can access it easily.

7. Do Target the Correct Keywords. Targeting the wrong keywords is a common mistake many optimizers make and even worse – veteran SEO professionals do it. Marketers select keywords that they think are explanatory of their website but the average searcher does not think in those same keyword terms. Picking the right keywords can increase or decrease traffic to your SEO campaign. A first-class keyword suggestion aid, for example the Google search-based keyword tool will help you find keywords that are appropriate for your site.

6. Do Include Long Tail Keywords. With a million websites competing for short tail keywords, it can take more than 6 months to rank in the top 20 for a competitive keyword. In this case, long tail keywords come in handy. Long tail keywords are more specific and can contain the name of a specific product, brand or city. Ranking for long tail keywords is comparatively easier and the rate of conversion is better than that of short tail keywords. Do include keywords in the title tags.

5. Do Maintain a Uniform URL Structure. If your website is dynamic, then you need to modify the URL structure of the web pages. This maintains uniformity and helps searchbots to understand which page it is indexing. It is very easy to maintain the URL structure in dynamic websites. Blogging platforms like Wordpress provide an option for permalinks. Customized dynamic websites can use URL rewrite in the .htaccess file for the same.

4. Don’t Link to Low Quality Websites. Link building is a very crucial aspect of search engine optimization. Search engines consider the number of incoming links to a website as an indication of their popularity and give them priority rankings. Many beginners fail to realize that it is links from authoritative and quality websites that are important and they mistakenly link to low quality websites for higher rankings. This tactic can cause the credibility of the website to go down with search engines and in some cases, the website may get banned.

3. Do Perform Competitive Intelligence. Before starting your search engine optimization program, visit the competing websites in the top results. Research these types of questions:

A. How many websites are competing for the same keyword? B. How old are the websites in top search engine results pages? C. How many back links do the top ranking websites list? D. What type of social media is used by the competing sites?

2. Do Take Advantage of Google Analytics. 2009 was the year when web analytics gained momentum. Google Analytics came up with advanced metrics and intelligence report features which revolutionized free analytics tools. Companies realized the benefits of using web analytics tools to extract their relevant data. Implement Google Analytics to analyze data and build a 2010 plan to increase traffic and rates of conversion.

1. Do Create Fresh Content. Search engines are famous for penalizing a website for publishing duplicate content. With plagiarism on the rise and availability of content checking tools such as Copyscape, marketers have become more cautious. Yahoo is considered to be among the harshest of all the search engines with regard to this penalty. Add fresh content to your website to help build visitor interest and credibility with the search engines.

Don’t overlook your inbound linking strategy as you think about search engine optimization for your site. An inbound link is a hyperlink back to your site from another web site. The one constant and reliable strategy in search engine optimization is that sites with a variety of high quality backlinks rank higher in the search engine results pages.

Why are these links to your site important? They can can…

bring potential customers to your site when they click on the link

increase the number of visitors to your web site

dramatically improve your search engine rankings

Even though there are software packages on the market that help automate the linking process, use them sparingly, if at all. The only way to succeed in linking strategies is (aside from creating useful content that will encourage inbound links) by manually creating the links. That’s a hard fact to swallow, given how I like to automate as much of my marketing as I can.

Here are the 10 most important inbound links you must have to your site:

1. Directory Links

Directories are indexes of online sites, typically organized by category. Links back to your site from directories like Yahoo Directory and DMOZ.org are very valuable. DMOZ.org is edited by human editors, and while it’s free, it may take awhile for your site to be listed. Getting listed in Yahoo’s Directory costs $299/year.

2. Press Releases

If you’re writing press releases, make sure they are optimized for keywords that someone would use to find a business like yours and include links back to your site, as well. Once written, you can have your press release distributed through a service like PRWeb.com, which will create links from high traffic news sites back to your site.

3. Article Directories

Writing and distributing articles through high traffic article directories, like EzineArticles. com, is a great way to get valuable inbound links from a high traffic site. By crafting an effective resource box at the close of your article, you can drive traffic back to your site!

4. Social Bookmarking

Similar to web browser bookmarks, social bookmarking sites store individual pages (bookmarks) online and allows users to tag (with keywords), organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web resources as well as share them with others. If you bookmark your own content on these sites (like Digg.com, Reddit.com, Del.icio.us. com), you get a link from the service. By producing content that your readers love and then bookmark to their friends, the link increases in SEO value.

5. Blog Comments

To find blog posts on which to comment, you can use blog-specific search engines like Google Blog Search. Make sure these are blogs read by your target market, not your colleagues. Brand yourself by always using the same name and remember to link back to your site. Always leave a comment that adds to the conversation that’s happening within the comments.

6. Social Media

Now, Google also indexes your Twitter updates and your social networking profiles. Add that to Web 2.0 hubsites like Scribd or HubPage and you’ve got the option of creating many, many inbound links in a very short period of time.

7. Blog/Podcast Syndication

Submitting the RSS feed of your blog and podcast to syndication services will give you a link back to your site. In some cases, each time you publish a new blog post, the post itself will also get a link.

8. Video Syndication

YouTube is one of the most visited sites online, and the number of sites that syndicate videos is growing each day. These sites often allow you to link to your site either in your video’s description or on your profile page, or both.

9. .EDU and .GOV Links

Search engines place a great deal of credibility in government and education web sites, and the links carry a great deal of weight. Frankly, it isn’t easy to get inbound links from these sites.

10. Internal Links

Remember, if you have more than one web site, or a web site and a blog, be sure and link one to the other. You can do this by linking one article to other related articles, or link to categories or archives of information.
