remember the first time I witnessed the true viral nature of Facebook. I was surfing through my news feed as usual, and found one of my friends had subscribed to a particularly funny fan page. I opened it in a spur of leisurely curiosity. What really caught my attention though, was the amount of people who had joined the page since its opening 24 hours ago; 100,000 fans. I continued to watch this page over the following days and quite frankly I was astonished by the amount of activity that was occurring and the rate at which it was growing.

It’s no secret that Facebook is the major hang out for the majority of the internet’s population. With over 400 million members, Facebook will continue to move forward, setting itself up as a goldmine for internet marketers. I refer to Facebook as a goldmine because although it’s still in its infancy, its systems are much like Google’s Adwords when they first started off. Very easy to produce an ROI and gather traffic to profit.

So how do we use Facebook to drive traffic to our websites to make money online?

There are a number of ways, but none can contend with the viral and profitable nature of a Facebook fan page. They can be setup within seconds and because of their association with Facebook’s systems, they have the potential to grow at an incredible rate if enough people join it early on.

A Facebook fan page goes viral because it utilizes the Facebook “News Feed”. Each member on Facebook has their own news feed which allows them to see their friends’ most recent activity. What this means is that if you “Like” a group called say, “Laughing at random things”, all of your friends are able to view that activity on their news feeds. If they also join, all their friends will be able to view that activity on their news feeds too. Thus, we get a snowball effect which sparks viral growth you can use in order to add exposure for your website or other promotions.

Fan pages are the way to go if you want viral traffic. In my earlier example of a viral page, it had – within just seven days – managed to increase its fan count to over 1.5 million. Imagine having the ability to get that much exposure? It has the potential to transform almost any website, and at that rate of growth, Facebook is the most viral marketing platform online right now.
